This morning we went out to breakfast and I post a photo of my meal on Facebook.
I sometimes do this, often to The Greater Distress Of The Internet.
I asked the waitress for a "Egg White Veggie Frittata" though she didn't ask me white kind of anything I wanted with it — so it just CAME with white toast. I would have asked for extra MEAT on the side or whole grain toast. So, this is not my normal, I don't typically do white bread. That said, What You See Is What You Get. I Ate Teh Foodz. I also ate, not shown, two slices of bacon, after tossing aside the nasty-ass turkey bacon that was offered with this frittata.
The internet gets distressed when Weight Loss Surgery Patients Eat Teh Food. The SOLIDS. The Not A Shake.
We hear —
- "Did you really eat that?"
- "Can you eat that?"
- "Should you eat that?"
- "Can you really eat white bread? Eggs? Bacon? Vegetables? ______?"
- "Did you really use butter?"
- "OMG, COFFEE?"
- "Wait, you use CREAM?"
- "What, no PROTEIN SHAKE?"
- "Wait — THOSE ARE CARBS!?!"
- "OMG TOAST?!?!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!?!??!?!"
- "I thought we could not have bread?"
- "But, I was told no TOAST?"
- "My surgeon told me no BREAD FOR LYYYFFFFEEEE!!!!"
- Etc, etc.. so forth, so on.
I have been getting these comments for as long as I have been blogging my intakes on the internets.
I had one person even offer the suggestion that my epilepsy (at the time, not diagnosed…) was Due To The Fact That I Ate Carbohydrates More Than She Was Suggested.
Here's a couple of random suggestions, y'all —
#1 – Bariatric Eating Plans Can Be DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT FROM ONE LOCATION TO ANOTHER.
#2 – Some of us are many years post op, and food happens. Ask around, do you know many 5-8-10 year post gastric-bypass patients that subside on meal replacements? <crickets> Right. "Things change." And, even though you may be TOLD that you are going to 'live on 1/4 cup of solids three times a day,' uh… that doesn't happen. I am sorry.
I rarely share the reality of what actually goes in my gullet these days because for one — it's so boring — and because, wow, some of Y'all Are Judgy! You have to realize, at pushing nine years later — it's back to food! It's normal life!
Tell me. What are you eating? Are you willing to SHARE? Let's start sharing.
I am currently snarfing up a sausage, egg and cheese breakfast biscuit and damn is it good!
For breakfast….deviled eggs…..two….and gasp….I piece of white toast…with butter. Lunch….a small piece of utlra thin crust pizza…but I am hungry again. I will need a snack. Dinner….tacos in a lettuce shell. I just like them that way….for what it is worth. Oh…and 1/3 of a banana. That is my day so far. Liquid….a latte and some iced tea.
I had a frittata too… ground turkey, black beans and eggs. Topped with a sprinkle of shredded cheese. I ate toast. It was good. Lunch is late – but is crab/lobster ( imitation ) on thin sliced bread – I slice my own so I can get it really thin – in the oven with melted muenster cheese.
I’ll be 2 years post op in a few weeks. I eat the foodz! Due to other medical conditions I have also gone gluten-free…. I’m so much fun to go out to eat with. 🙂 Oh yeah, I go OUT to eat, like in a real restaurant and everything! OMG! Also, I occasionally have a cocktail or when I can find it I will have a gluten free beer.
When we were in Boston this summer I (are you sitting down) I had pizza, wings, and beer because I found a place that had GOOD gluten free pizza, wings, and beer! I had 2 wings, not quite 2 slices of pizza, 2/3 of a bottle of beer and took the rest back to the hotel and had it for breakfast! It was SO good!
Also, it was a treat. I do not eat like that every day. To not ever have some of my favorite foods responsibly set me (ME) up for failure. I know I can only abstain for so long and then if I don’t have a little I set myself up for a binge. That’s me.
My doctor has been very happy with my progress. I have maintained my current weight for a year and a half. While the scale is not what my goal was post op, I am happily smaller than the size I expected to be. I can live with that.
Also, to open another post gastric bypass can of worms…. I rarely take my vitamins. 🙂
Oh and coffee, I START my day with half a pot. Usually have at least one large coffee from Dunkin Donuts in addition if I’m out running around. Also, while I use splenda instead of sugar, I do full cream or half and half.
Food happens…sugar happens…carb happens…LIFE happens. Yeah, these things do happen, but…as MM has said more than once, MODERATION on the “bads” is a good thing, too…cuz…well…the “bads” are gonna happen. Thanks for always being honest with us, MM!!!!! Luv ya!
Today it’s been protein coffee, oatmeal and a banana, chilli w/full fat cheese (ds – need the fat) and a few tortilla chips, and now I’m working on a second protein coffee (mmmm, pumpkiny). Tonight there’ll be pork stir fry with a little brown rice. Some sort of snack before bed – quite possibly a protein shake. I mainly continue the shakes just because it’s the easiest way for me to keep my protein intake at 120g/day but I still eat plenty of teh foodz.
I’d eat that!! Geesh, this is about living, not DIEting.
Keep thy judgements to thyself.
I love the honest in this Post and how real you are about what you eat. I stopped taking pictures of food and posting it on my blog after I got a nasty gram from someone who felt that I should be eating carbohydrates. After almost a year of not posting food pictures I finally decided I’ll post whatever I want and blog about what ever I want and if someone wants to judge me and send Nasty grams, I have a an X button and I know how to ignore them.
I just love how everyone else knows what you should put in your mouth better than you, your doctor and your nutritionist. It blows my mind how judgmental people can be!
Yeah. Folks need to realize that it all depends on where you are in your journey what you can and can not eat or choose to eat. I too post my foods. I got laughing Beth with your list of common questions. LOL
It was like Ground Hog Day!
Everyone needs to find their place of eating and as you and I know it changes over time.
Personally I like to see what others eat as it gives me ideas. But I know what I can eat and not eat and that’s what’s most important.
I don’t mind the questions as they usually come from newly stitched folk.
But I don’t respond to the judgers.
It’s my blog and my tiny tank and I will make my own choices good or bad.
Great blog post, and I had seen your breakfast shot this morning and thought yum, White toast it is one thing I really miss and eat every once in a while. I could have finished those crusts!!
Often I just do not bother with the bread because it feels icky – but – if it’s GOOD BREAD I might give it more of a chance. 😉 Today, it was NOT WORTH IT. You learn these things.
That first comment really got to me – it was years ago – I am over it now but it was hurtful.
It takes a lot to GET to that point, yanno?
I have the brain of a DS’er.
Shit happens. LOL
Gluten-free is everywhere these days.
OM NOM NOM on your day!
Deviled. Of course.
I was explaining the goodness of sausage gravy to my son this morning. He didn’t get it.
